Goodbye, College Park

While we’re sad to see you go, if you have any questions about leaving Maryland, please ask.

We have some information on our transportation page, and here are several numbers for taxi cabs. (If you don’t have a phone, ask either at the registration desk or at the information desk on the first floor, and someone can call one for you.)

You can also take a cab or the green line to the Greenbelt metro station and catch the B30 bus to BWI airport. The bus runs every 40 minutes—check here for the timetable.

centerNet/Google Meeting

Just a note to let you know that our penultimate event, the centerNet meeting and Google Books Search presentation will start at 12:50pm in the Charles Carroll room.

Conference Abstract Addendum: SDH-SEMI Panel Abstracts

When deciding which panel to see on Thursday, 2pm-3:30pm make sure to read these abstracts first, for the SDH-SEMI Panel with Christian Vandendorpe, Richard Cunningham, Alan Galey and Jon Saklofske. It’s sure to be a wonderful session.

When You Arrive on Campus

Homebase for the conference will be located in the Colony Ballroom on the second floor of the Stamp Student Union on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park. The registration desk will be just outside the Ballroom, and the posters, book tables, coffee breaks, and other displays will all take place inside that room.

When you arrive, you’ll either be coming via bus to the Stamp Student Union bus slip or via car, most likely to the Union Lane Garage. From the slip, the Union will be located across Campus Drive to your right. From the garage, the Union is located across Union Lane. Here’s a interactive version of the campus map with a printable PDF, which will also be included in your registration packets.

We will be running a shuttle service Monday night through Thursday afternoon from the local College Park hotels to the Stamp Student Union bus slip. You can view the schedule here, and a copy is included in your packet.

T-minus 1 Week: A/V, Lunches, & Weather

Questions are coming in about various details about the conference, so we thought we’d post some odds and ends.

1. A/V needs and laptop availability: Each session room (for panels and papers) will be equipped with a laptop and a projector. These are PC laptops running on the XP operating system. Those who wish to connect their own laptops should feel free do to so—we’ll have adapters ready for Macs made in the last 5 years. Mac users might want to come equipped with an adapter of their own as well as a USB drive. Those presenting posters are encouraged to bring their own laptops, if presenting digitally.

2. Lunch: dh09 won’t be providing lunches during the conference, but there are a number of shops in the Stamp Student Union and other local eateries within walking distance of campus. Participants will get a mini-dining guide in their registration folders but should also feel free to ask one of our volunteers for help.

3. Weather: College Park tends to be hot and humid in June, and this summer is no exception. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid to high 80s during the day (29-32 C), going down to about 70 over night (21-23 C). The conference will be very air-conditioned inside, so you might want to bring a sweater or jacket for the daytime. We’re expected to have scattered thunderstorms during the day, so you might put a light jacket, hat, or umbrella on your packing list.

Still Looking for Accommodations?

If you haven’t yet booked your accommodations for the conference, some extra rooms have opened up at the University’s Inn and Conference Center. A Marriott hotel located on the edge of campus, this hotel has all the standard features and is about a fifteen-minute walk to the Stamp Student Union, where the conference will be held. Rooms are $129 a night, but there are only a few rooms available.
