Konishi Hiroko, Hiroshima Survivor

"The only warning that then 13-year-old Konishi picked up was the drone of a B-29 bomber high up in the sky. After the blast, she remembers the sounds of screams in the air. She was so badly burned that at first her mother didn't recognize her. 'My mother gave me life twice,' says Konishi. 'Without her, I would have let myself die.'"
