Scavenger
Painting, 1946, of an elderly woman returning from the backbreaking work of buying goods. Her glasses are broken and tied together with a string. She wears the wartime attire of monpei, trousers for women. Women tended to do more of this kind of work than men in the days of the "bamboo shoots" economy.
