Three Generations and a Farm Kitchen, mid-1950s

(Left) Three generations of farm women; prepare tea for a guest. (Right) Farm woman at work in the kitchen.
Several years after the Occupation and extensive land reform, there are few signs of material change in these farm homes.
From: Maraini, Fosco. Meeting in Japan. New York: The Viking Press, 1960 (translated from Italian and first published in English in 1959). Based on a return trip to Japan in 1953. Maraini's first sojourn in Japan was 1936-1947, with his wife and daughters. Considered to be anti-fascists by the Japanese government, the Maraini family was interned under harsh conditions near Nagoya, 1943-1945, and liberated by Allied Occupation forces after the way.
