Women Enter New Sports, 1950

"It was a common saying that the two things that got stronger after the war were 'josei and kutushita' (women and socks). Although this was not fully evident until 1960, women were entering new fields, one after the other, by 1950. In sports, counter clockwise from top: (1), the first female jockeys appeared, August 18, in Yamagata Prefecture at the Kogetsu Horse Racing Arena. (2) Young hopefuls were trying out for a women's pro-baseball team, June 2, in Fukuoka." (3) The first women's boxing match was in Hiroshima, Nov. 23.
