GIs and Prostitute, Yokohama, ca. 1955
This photo of GIs and a Japanese prostitute (probably a streetwalker) was taken by Japanese woman photographer Tokiwa Toyoko (b. 1930), early in her career. It indicates the continuous U.S. military presence in Japan and bar and brothel cultures around U.S. bases. This photo was used in Tokiwa's first solo exhibition, "Working Women," 1956. "Especially provacative were her photographs of prostitutes in the red-light district near a major U.S. army base in Yokohama, depicted with American soldiers..."
