Okinawan Terrain

Doughboys of the Ninety-sixth Division scaled these jagged cliffs along the southwestern part of Okinawa in the final drive to crush Japanese resistance. Naval and artillery gunfire aided in sealing the caves as men climbed ropes and cargo nets. American tanks are shown deployed in front of the escarpment prior to the scaling.
