Imperial Newly Weds

"Arrived at the Togu temporary palace, the Crown Prince and his bride had the dinner sent over by the Emperor and Empress at 6 p.m. on April 10, 1959, after a brief rest during which time they glanced over the stories and photographs of their wedding in the evening papers.
"At 9 p.m., Kanroji and his wife handed four silvers saucers, each holding 26 rice cakes--the same number as the age of the Crown Princess according to the Japanese way of counting--to a court lady to be placed in the bedroom of the newlyweds. This rite is called the 'Mikayonomochi-no-gi' and is a prayer for the early birth of a prince."
