"Kabuki actor BandBandō Tamasaburō playing the role of the woman Okaru in The Treasury of Loyal Retainers. The Kabuki theater, in which all performers are men, features actors like Tamasaburō who can play the roles of various types of beautiful women. His makeup consists chiefly of the heavy white face powder typical of Kabuki." In the 1980s Tamasaburō attained great popularity and revived interest in Kabuki theater among young Japanese people.
