Encoding for Black Lives: Moving from Analog to Digital Markup in African American Rhetorical History (9:30am-12:00pm)

This hands-on, interactive pre-conference workshop is modeled after the AADHum Initiative’s digital humanities incubators. We will explore how digital tools and methods can be used to facilitate, deepen, and problematize humanities research. Dr. Jessica H. Lu will draw upon her own work analyzing the formation, texture, and disruption of freedom ideas in African American discourse to demonstrate how traditionally analog methods of research can be extended by contemporary tools. Participants will be introduced to Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) markup language as we discuss how digital methods can foster productive ways of reading, analyzing, and archiving text-based research material. We’ll also explore how intentionally centering African American history and culture requires us to critique and transform digital tools like TEI and to remain self-reflexive about how we use new skills in our research.

Participants will walk away with:

• introductory experience with several markup languages, including TEI, HTML, and CSS;
• instructional guides for incorporating several open-source software programs and platforms (including Atom text editor, GitHub, and GitHub Desktop) into their online and offline workflows;
• a functional model for facilitating intentionally digital, intentionally Black incubators within their own organizations and institutions.

QSR NVivo Training for Humanities Research (2:00-5:00pm)

Facilitated by AADHum and NVivo representatives, this instructional course guides participants through the foundations of NVivo software and is designed for those who need to analyze unstructured or qualitative data.

At the end of this course, you will be equipped to:

• Understand NVivo’s terminology and functions and how the software can support data analysis
• Set up a project and ensure that all the components of your research design are represented in NVivo
• Import and organize your source material in preparation for analysis
• Begin analyzing data through reading, summary, and interpretation
• Deepen your analysis with different coding techniques and reflection
• Understand the value of building effective node structures
• Work with text analysis and coding queries to explore and code textual data
• Use visualizations to explore your data

*Note: Installation of NVivo software on your personal/professional device is NOT required for this pre-conference. Appropriately equipped devices will be provided for instructional use.
