Proof of concept

The application version of the Virtual Lightbox is an image-based whiteboard, programmed in Java, with a peer-to-peer networking architecture implemented in RMI and the Java Shared Data Toolkit. All users participating in a common Lightbox session see the same images in the same on-screen configuration at the same time. Movement of an image and other operations are all globally propagated in realtime. The application version does the following:

  • Offers a client display area (the "surface" of the Lightbox) where individual users may create an image set and then manipulate the images for comparison and study.
  • Allows multiple users of the Lightbox (who may be geographically distant from each other) to collaboratively view and manipulate the same image set in realtime.
  • Allows multiple users of the Lightbox (who may be geographically distant from each other) to collaboratively perform a variety of image processing operations on the same image set in realtime.

The current version is 1.1.6. It has been tested on Windows NT/98/2000, UNIX (Solaris)/Linux, and Mac OS X. Recommended minimum systems requirements are a 500 Mhz Pentium III processor (for Windows) and 128 MB of RAM. Much more detail is available in the help documentation.

The applet version offers something a little different . . .
