Hughes @ 100 Poetry Slam

On February 9, 2002, Border's Books & Music, the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the African Diaspora, the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH), and the Committee on Africa and the Americas presented The Langston Hughes Centennial Poetry Slam, a featured event in the campus commemoration of African-American History Month. The poetry slam took place at the University of Maryland?s recently inaugurated Clarice Smith Center for Performing Arts and was broadcast live over the Internet. The program featured university faculty and students, local poets, as well as high school students from select Prince Georges County public schools in the area. Special guests from the university faculty and local community served as judges and scorekeepers. A personal acquaintance of Langston Hughes, David C. Driskell, Professor Emeritus of the Art Department presented welcoming remarks.
