Assistant Dean for Graduate and International Programs at University of Pennsylvania Law School

The Assistant Dean for Graduate and International Programs is responsible for all administrative aspects of the University of Pennsylvania Law School's graduate degree programs (LL.M., LL.C.M., and S.J.D. programs, designed primarily for international lawyers and law students) and is the administrator of a variety of international law related projects throughout the Law School.

Reporting to the Vice Dean for Administrative Services, the Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs has three core functions: recruiting and admitting a talented student body, ensuring their satisfactory transition to their studies, and coordinating the Law School's international law programs.

Recruiting & Admissions:

  • develop and implement recruiting strategies to bring the strongest possible group of international lawyers and students of the law to Penn for graduate study,
  • develop relationships with law faculty and programs around the world to promote Penn Law,
  • with the Dean and the Committee on International Programs, develop and implement admissions and financial aid strategies,
  • have an excellent understanding of legal education programs around the world,
  • read applications and render decisions, referring appropriate cases to the Committee, to admit approximately 80 LL.M. students annually, with additional LL.C.M. and S.J.D. candidates as appropriate.
Transition to Studies:
  • organize and provide administrative support for a mandatory, credit bearing program introducing the American Legal system to the LL.M. class, prior to the start of the fall semester,
  • provide counseling on academic matters and basic career advice to graduate students,
  • ensure students' smooth adjustment to study in the US, including assistance with housing, visa, health, and family matters as possible and appropriate,
  • work with Career Planning & Placement to prepare LL.M. students for exploration of the US legal system and employment market.
International Programs:
  • serve as Penn Law's ambassador to various external constituencies of the international program (schools that send students to Penn, potential employers, other international programs),
  • serve as primary coordinator for international exchange programs and visiting scholars programs,
  • provide administrative support for the international academic program, which may include the development of innovative programs and international law resources as well as arrangements for speakers, conferences, and visitors.

This is a full-time position with full University benefits. JD, LLM, or equivalent foreign degree in law, or graduate degree strongly preferred; BA or BS required. Experience in the administration of international legal education or programs, or with international law students, strongly preferred. Admissions experience assessing international law degrees a plus. Ability to work with extremely diverse populations required; languages in addition to English preferred. Ability to develop and implement creative programming goals essential. Ability to work cooperatively with various Law School departments, faculty, and staff to achieve program goals. Commitment to service to students, which defines Penn Law, essential. For appropriate candidates, some teaching may be possible.
