Visiting Scholar Scheme
The Faculty of Arts at Monash University supports a formal Visiting
Scholar Scheme to encourage interstate and overseas researchers to visit
the Faculty and to work with Monash University researchers. The Scheme
offers support for short term (up to one semester) research visits to
the university. Applicants cannot apply directly but must be nominated
through an academic unit or School within the faculty. A stipend of
approx. AUD$5,000-$10,000 (depending on the length of visit) is
available in addition to an office and access to computer, library and
university facilities.
There are two categories of Visiting Scholars: Distinguished Visiting
Scholars and Collaborative Visiting Scholars.
1) Distinguished Visiting Scholars determine their own research program,
but are expected to make themselves available to postgraduate students
in the Faculty.
2) Collaborative Visiting Scholars are expected to work closely with
Monash staff with a view to developing joint funding proposals and/or
published research outcomes.
Both categories of Visiting Scholar are required to present a public
lecture in addition to a research seminar in the School to which they
are attached.
Please note that this program does not support higher degree researchers
and applicants should normally hold a PhD or equivalent degree and have
established themselves as researchers. Scholars are nominated by an
academic unit for selection at the Faculty level by the Faculty Research
Committee.
The Centre for Women's Studies and Gender Research is interested in
receiving expressions of interest from Women's Studies scholars,
indicating their broad research background, their proposed/current
research which they would like to work on while at Monash University,
and including their resume with the details of three referees. Staff of
the Centre for Women's Studies and Gender Research will select and
nominate a scholar from among those who have submitted expressions of
interest for the Faculty selection round. Those with research interests
common to more than one academic unit may be nominated jointly by
Women's Studies and another unit.
Two rounds are held each year and expressions of interest are sought
for Round One, closing annually in April for visits in semester 2
(July-November) of the current year, and Round Two closing annually in
August for semester 1 (Feb-June) of the following year. Those
considering applying for future rounds are also encouraged to make
contact with the Centre as early as possible.
Women's Studies scholars are encouraged to contact the Director of the
Centre for Women's Studies and Gender Research in the first instance.
While scholars working in the full range of Women's Studies areas across
the humanities, social sciences, education and law are encouraged,
expressions of interest from those working in the following areas would
be particularly welcome:
Ø feminist theory, feminist literary, film and cultural studies
Ø gender and labour market issues
Ø women's studies teaching and learning developments internationally
Ø postcolonialism, indigeneity, multiculturalism and cross-cultural
feminisms
Ø gender issues, feminist movements & women's studies in the
Asia-Pacific region
