Comparative Women/Gender/Nationalism Bibliography The following bibliography appeared on H-WOMEN (June 1994). ******************************************************* From: IVAALM%urc.tue.nl@UICVM.UIC.EDU Institute of Social Studies in The Hague partial research bibliography: women/gender/nationalism In response to recent discussions on this list about women and nationalism, women's movements worldwide, etc., here is a VERY incomplete bibliography of research at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague. (Note: ISS is a multidisciplinary centre for postgraduate teaching and research; its small, competitive PhD programme) as well as two of its 15-month MA programmes (a) Women and Development (b) Politics of Alternative Development Strategies may also be of interest to readers of this list.) The database from which this bibliography was drawn is in the process of being developed, and is presently not fully searchable, but I thought I would send what I could. Related articles from *Development and Change* are also included because, although contributors are international, ISS owns and edits this journal. For information about the individual papers, contact the ISS Bookshop (for books and working papers); the Research office (for reports) or the individual authors (c/o ISS). Fax and other information has been added to the end of the bibliography. I hope you find it interesting/useful. --- Linda McPhee, ivaaLM@urc.tue.NL ******************************************** ******************************************** Brouwers, H.M., O. van Cranenburgh, F. Women's Studies is not just a matter of doing research on women. It is also about examining, analysing and critizing existing intellectual tools. The consequences of ignoring the gender relation in formulating theories are not just gaps in knowledge but also distortions of reality. The present book examines how gender has ben treated in mainstream economics and the implications for understanding gender relations. For example, the notion of the economic-man maximising uility; the characteristics of male workers applied to female workers; the notion of the household as a homogeneous, uniform unit of analysis, the implications of sexual division of labour and the role of housework; the measurement and valuation of women's work; women and economic developoment are some of the issues dealt with here. In addition some alternative frameworks are also examined. Finally how all these relate to policy are discussed. The book is *not* a collection of papers but a critical appraisal of existing literature. (book) Krishnaraj, M. et.al. (1987) *Women and Society in India*. New Delhi: Ajanta Publishers. The achievement of change requires an understanding of the interactive processes that take place in the actors involved. This implies an analysis of the policies implemented by governments that affect women; of how the state intervenes in women's lives and of the specific nature of state structures. This book also documents how women in specific situations have organized themselves and have developed strategies, methods and action to acquire power in order to change and transform the patriarchal structures they face. These interactive processes are analysed in various parts of the world in relation to such issues as survival of the poor in fast-growing urban centres, religious fundamentalism, new reproductive technologies and women as consumers; processes which represent various dimensions of complex relationship: women-government-the state./ (book) Lycklama Nijeholt, G.
