{"id":6373,"date":"2012-02-15T08:34:17","date_gmt":"2012-02-15T13:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/?p=5182"},"modified":"2020-10-08T16:02:32","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T20:02:32","slug":"mith-faculty-fellow-answers-readers-questions-on-times-taking-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/mith-faculty-fellow-answers-readers-questions-on-times-taking-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"MITH Faculty Fellow Answers Readers&#8217; Questions on Times\u2019 \u201cTaking Questions\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Carla Peterson, professor of English and a MITH Faculty Fellow, is being featured this week by <a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/02\/13\/taking-questions-carla-l-peterson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times City Room &#8220;Taking Questions&#8221; series <\/a>on her recent book, <a href=\"http:\/\/yalepress.yale.edu\/book.asp?isbn=9780300162554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Black Gotham: A Family History of African Americans in Nineteenth-Century New York City<\/em><\/a> (Yale University Press, 2011). <em>Black Gotham<\/em> is a riveting account of Peterson&#8217;s quest to reconstruct the lives of her nineteenth-century ancestors. As she shares their stories and those of their friends, neighbors, and business associates, she illuminates the wider history of African-American elites in New York City. Readers may submit their questions to Dr. Peterson about nineteenth-century black New York on the <a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/02\/13\/taking-questions-carla-l-peterson\/#postComment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Taking Questions&#8221;<\/a> page, and she will respond in subsequent posts.<\/p>\n<p>During her current MITH faculty fellowship, Peterson is creating the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackgothamarchive.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black Gotham Archive<\/a>, a dynamic website based upon her book, <em>Black Gotham<\/em>. The site chronicles the visual and textual history of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, and links this information to interactive maps, in order to create a deeper understanding of nineteenth-century black New Yorkers.
