Until recently, this has not been a<br \/>\ndifficult question, but the creation of massive databases of digitized<br \/>\ndocuments has begun to enable researchers to explore new<br \/>\npossibilities. Text can be seen not just as words to be read but as<br \/>\ndata to be measured. In this dialog, Mimno will present some examples of<br \/>\nthe use of computational methods to analyze 100 years of journal<br \/>\narticles from JStor. Mimno will then consider how to extend this case<br \/>\nstudy to general practice. How can we empower scholars to formulate<br \/>\nhypotheses and test them experimentally, all while maintaining<br \/>\nappropriate caution and skepticism?<\/p>\n<p>The talk will be held in the MITH Seminar Room, in the basement of McKeldin Library.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.umass.edu\/~mimno\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David\u00a0Mimno<\/a> is a postdoctoral researcher in the Computer Science<br \/>\ndepartment at Princeton University. His research is on data mining in<br \/>\ntext collections, with a focus on computational approaches to the<br \/>\nHumanities. As a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts,<br \/>\nAmherst he wrote the topic modeling package in the <a href=\"http:\/\/mallet.cs.umass.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MALLET machine<br \/>\nlearning toolkit<\/a>. Prior to graduate school, he was Head Programmer at<br \/>\nthe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perseus.tufts.edu\/hopper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Perseus Project<\/a> at Tufts University, where he designed and<br \/>\nimplemented the current Perseus web interface (Hopper 4.0). David&#8217;s<br \/>\nwork is supported by a Digital Humanities Research grant from Google<br \/>\nand a Computing Innovation fellowship from the National Science Foundation (NSF).<\/p>\n<p>Coming up @MITH 10\/04: Robert K.
