Questions such as these have long drawn the curiosity of linguistics and language scholars. Up until now, audio recordings served as the primary source material for those studying accent and dialect history. Now, thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/tdps.umd.edu\/faculty\/Leigh-Wilson-Smiley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leigh Wilson Smiley<\/a>, Head of the MFA in Performance in the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at the University of Maryland, and MITH Resident Fellow, her launch of the <a href=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/vada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visual Accent and Dialect Archive<\/a> (VADA) allows viewers to closely monitor facial movements of speakers while listening to English spoken in a variety of accents and dialects.<\/p>\n<p>VADA is a crowd-sourced YouTube video archive of English-language accents and dialects gathered from around the globe, providing visual information on language sound pronunciation for the theater community. Users are able to browse dialects from a selection of recorded interviews from \u201cdialect donors\u201d, who read a designated passage in English, or speak in their own words, in a variety of accents and dialects.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignleft\" title=\"vada_launch_logo\" src=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/vada_launch_logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"54\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignleft\" title=\"VADA_Launch\" src=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/vada_launch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"198\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These videos are useful, Leigh explains, when working with an actor who uses their own facial muscles differently, and is learning an accent for a role. Observing the facial movement while hearing the words aloud assists the acquisition process. Leigh hopes VADA will serve as the central video source of people speaking English in different dialects for teachers and linguists, as well as for dialect and voice coaches working in professional theater.<\/p>\n<p>The Archive is currently in Phase 1 and <a href=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/vada\/?q=node\/238\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">welcomes<\/a> user-contributed videos of English-language accents and dialects from around the globe that have been uploaded to YouTube and use the project\u2019s tag. The project currently contains videos from several geographic regions within Asia, Europe, North America and South\/Central America, and seeks to add content from the continents of Africa and Oceania. Contributors may create up to three different video recordings, each of which demonstrates a different aspect of one\u2019s accent or dialect. Linguists and language scholars are also invited to join the team as a contributor, by adding linguistic information to the video content.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian neighborhood dialect in Philadelphia is Scottish because the shipbuilders who originally landed there were Scotsmen. The Italians adopted certain words in the Scottish dialect, thus creating the multi-dialectic fabric of the city as it stands today. The videos on VADA tell similar stories: listeners learn of a family\u2019s dialectic history from Cary, Illinois, and the typical lifestyle in San Miguel, El Salvador.
