Dame is completing his dissertation, \u201cTalk Amongst Yourselves: Community Formation in Transgender Counterpublic Discourse Online,\u201d which explores the affective and structural meanings assigned to \u201ccommunity\u201d in English-language transgender discourse online.<\/p>\n<p>During the fellowship, Dame will work on the second chapter of his dissertation, which focuses on the ideological meaning of \u201ccisgender\u201d and its role in shaping community sentiment in Usenet discourse. As part of this project, he will develop and launch an archive of posts from several major transgender-related newsgroups, held in the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/usenethistorical\">Internet Archives\u2019 Usenet Historical Collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Using Critical and Multi-Modal Discourse Analysis, Dame analyzes how users past and present construct \u201ctransgender community\u201d in discourse, and the impact of platform-specific affordances on these discussions. Each chapter draws on a different site, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltransgenderarchive.net\/catalog?f%5Bgenre_ssim%5D%5B%5D=Periodicals\">1990s movement publications<\/a>, archival data from Usenet newsgroups, ethnographic interviews with transgender-identified individuals, informational websites, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/15295036.2015.1130846?journalCode=rcsm20\">and Tumblr<\/a>. Throughout these different sites, he argues community\u2019s use as a guiding heuristic, and the accompanying emphasis on the term\u2019s positive affective associations, obscures key differences, disconnects, and inequalities amongst discourse participants.<\/p>\n<p>Dame\u2019s work tackles core Digital Humanities questions on the roles organizational architecture, metadata, and standardization play in guiding the flow and direction of discourse.
