The Library of Congress has developed a user-friendly <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/about\/api\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Application Program Interface (API)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to explore the data contained in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronicling America<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While previously working at the Library of Congress, MITH\u2019s Lead Developer <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/people\/person\/ed-summers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ed Summers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped design this API and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/libraryofcongress\/chronam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open source application<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that makes it available. Read below for more information on the contest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WASHINGTON (October 28, 2015) \u2014 The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) today launched a nationwide contest, challenging members of the public to produce creative web-based projects using data pulled from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronicling America<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the digital repository of historic U.S. newspapers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronicling America<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> database, created through a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress, provides free digital access to ten million pages of historically significant newspapers published in the United States between 1836 and 1922.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a competition posted at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.challenge.gov\/challenge\/chronicling-america-historic-american-newspapers-data-challenge\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Challenge.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, NEH encourages contestants to develop data visualizations, web-based tools, or other innovative web-based projects using the open data found at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronicling America<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronicling America<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an invaluable resource that preserves and makes available to all the first draft of America\u2019s history,\u201d said NEH Chairman William D. Adams. \u201cWe at NEH would like to invite hackers of all ages to put their talents toward uncovering and presenting the many treasures to be found in this remarkable collection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entries should uncover trends, display insights, explore a theme, or tell a story. For example, entries using the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronicling America<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> newspaper data could:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show how local news covered the baseball World Series<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trace the development of the motion picture industry in the United States<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow the enactment of amendments to the Constitution<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analyze coverage of historic political campaigns<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Map the travels of a president across the country using local news coverage<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show changes in advertising logos or newspaper mastheads over time<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Track the price or adoption of consumer goods through history<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore tourism in different locations in the United States<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examine how Thanksgiving was celebrated in various regions of the country<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NEH will award winning entries $5,000 for First Prize, $3,000 for Second Prize, and $2,000 for Third Prize. NEH may award up to three separate K-12 Student Prizes of $1,000 each. In addition to cash prizes, winners of the contest will be invited to Washington, DC in September 2016 to present their work at an annual National Digital Newspaper Program meeting at NEH headquarters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contest closes on June 15, 2016. NEH staff will review entries, and will send the top submissions to a panel of expert judges. NEH will select a judging panel consisting of three outside experts, chosen for their achievements in the humanities and digital humanities.
