{"id":10985,"date":"2011-03-29T08:02:57","date_gmt":"2011-03-29T12:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/?p=10985"},"modified":"2020-10-08T16:03:33","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T20:03:33","slug":"mith-and-dh-in-the-news-and-in-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/mith-and-dh-in-the-news-and-in-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"MITH and DH in the News and in the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There has been so much recent activity at MITH that we&#8217;d like to take a moment and share a brief digest of MITH in the news and in the world.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two weeks ago, Penn State University was host to the <a href=\"http:\/\/textualsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Society for Textual Scholarship 2011 International Conference<\/a> for which. MITH\u2019s Associate Director Matthew Kirschenbaum served as\u00a0 Program Chair. The event was well received by those who attended and garnered much <a href=\"http:\/\/twapperkeeper.com\/hashtag\/sts11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">attention and discussion on Twitter<\/a>.\u00a0 As the end of STS11 coincided with the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/tapor.ualberta.ca\/taporwiki\/index.php\/Day_in_the_Life_of_the_Digital_Humanities_2011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Day of Digital Humanities<\/a>, Matt used the opportunity to blog his \u201cday\u201d in a post entitled, <a href=\"http:\/\/ra.tapor.ualberta.ca\/~dayofdh2011\/matthewkirschenbaum\/2011\/03\/19\/sts11-dh-andas-textual-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cSTS11: DH and\/as Textual Scholarship\u201d<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>MITH&#8217;s Software Architect, Jim Smith, participated last week in the <a href=\"http:\/\/openannotation.org\/phaseIIworkshop.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open Annotation Collaboration Phase II Workshop<\/a> in Chicago on March 24 and 25. Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, OAC Phase II represents the next step in MITH&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/research\/oac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">development of specialized tools devoted to scholarly annotation services<\/a> on the web .<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Following his success in running a groundbreaking <a href=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/apiworkshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conference devoted to Application Programming Interfaces<\/a> recently hosted by MITH, Assistant Director Dave Lester participated last week in a National Digital Humanities &#8220;Conversation on Communities, Conferences, and Centers&#8221; sponsored by the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE). NITLE has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nitle.org\/live\/events\/122-joining-the-national-digital-humanities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">archived a recording of this event<\/a> for those who are interested in \u201c\u00a0joining the national (and international) conversation on the digital humanities.&#8221; A stellar cast of digital humanities scholars including, Jentery Sayers and Jason Jones, joined Dave for this discussion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Dave Lester is also currently away from MITH in order to participate in a two-day code sprint at Indiana University along with MITH Web Programmer, Grant Dickie, and Jim Smith. They join our IU colleagues to further develop the <a href=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/tile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Text-Image Linking Environment (TILE) project<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If all this activity isn&#8217;t enough, on Saturday, April 2 several members of the MITH team, led by Director Neil Fraistat, will be headed to Oxford for a meeting of the Coalition of Humanities and Art Infrastructures and Networks &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts-humanities.net\/chain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CHAIN<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A little closer to home, please be reminded of our wonderful <a href=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digital Dialogue series<\/a> that will feature MITH staff as presenters in the coming weeks: <a href=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/329-mith-digital-dialogue-travis-brown-teaching-machines-to-read-milton-natural-language-processing-challenges-for-literary-and-historical-texts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 29 \u2013 Travis Brown<\/a>, April 19 \u2013 Seth Denbo and Neil Fraistat, and April 26, Jim Smith.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We have been closely following Patricia Cohen&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/22\/books\/digital-humanities-boots-up-on-some-campuses.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coverage of the digital humanities in the New York Times<\/a> and were happy to receive see mention in a recent article of a past MITH project, the <a href=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/research\/soweto-76-a-living-digital-archive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Soweto &#8217;76 Archive<\/a>.
