{"id":10956,"date":"2011-11-14T13:00:43","date_gmt":"2011-11-14T18:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/?p=10956"},"modified":"2020-10-08T16:02:43","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T20:02:43","slug":"delmas-grant-to-support-the-shelley-godwin-archive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/delmas-grant-to-support-the-shelley-godwin-archive\/","title":{"rendered":"Delmas Grant to Support the Shelley-Godwin Archive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MITH is pleased to announce the receipt of a generous grant from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delmas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation<\/a> to support our work on the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shelleygodwinarchive.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shelley-Godwin Archive,<\/a><\/em> under the supervision of MITH Director and Shelley scholar, Neil Fraistat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shelleygodwinarchive.org\"><img class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4663\" title=\"Home Page of The Shelley-Godwin Archive\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/mith.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/sga_screenshot_sm.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"218\" \/><\/a>A recent recipient of a three-year grant from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neh.gov\/grants\/guidelines\/Collections_and_Resources.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NEH\u2019s division of Preservation and Access<\/a>, the<em> Shelley-Godwin Archive<\/em> will contain in digital form all available manuscripts and first editions of Mary Wollstonecraft, William Godwin, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. This single family&#8211;Mary Shelley was the daughter of Godwin and Wollstonecraft, and the wife of Percy Bysshe&#8211;embodies an archetype of British Romanticism: all four struggled in their writings and lives to change the world. Their most important works&#8211;Wollstonecraft\u2019s <em>Vindication of the Rights of Woman<\/em>, Godwin\u2019s <em>Enquiry Concerning Political Justice<\/em>, P.B. Shelley\u2019s <em>Queen Mab<\/em>, and <em>Prometheus Unbound<\/em>, and Mary Shelley\u2019s <em>Frankenstein<\/em>&#8211;received very different degrees of acclaim in their authors\u2019 lifetimes. All, however, have had lasting and profound effects on international culture.<\/p>\n<p>MITH is partnering in this work with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bodleian Libraries<\/a> of University of Oxford, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huntington.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Huntington Library<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/hcl.harvard.edu\/libraries\/houghton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Houghton Library<\/a> of Harvard College, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Library<\/a>, and the Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Public Library<\/a>, which together hold more than an estimated 90% of the known manuscripts. The project aims to create an innovative archival framework constituting a new model of best practices for research libraries wishing to make freely available to the public their manuscript and print holdings. During the three-year initial phase of the project, the project will be including the nearly thirty known Percy Shelley notebooks and his major philosophical poem, <em>Queen Mab<\/em>, with his extensive reworking; all of the manuscripts for and the first three editions of Mary Shelley\u2019s <em>Frankenstein<\/em>, along with the first two volumes of Mary Shelley\u2019s journals; the manuscripts of two novels by William Godwin, <em>Fleetwood<\/em> and <em>Cloudesley<\/em>; and the ten volumes of <em>Shelley and his Circle<\/em> with their invaluable research and all the manuscripts contained in those volumes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.delmas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation<\/a> will be supporting the work of a team of encoding specialists to begin work on the<em> Shelley-Godwin Archive <\/em>materials beginning in January 2012.
