On Wednesday, September 5th, MITH invited friends and colleagues present and past to help us celebrate our move to a new, sunlit space. Director of the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (CHNM) Dan Cohen gave the keynote, highlighting MITH’s international work and membership in the “DH culture of nice”. University of Maryland Vice President for Research Pat O’Shea, College of Arts and Humanities Dean Bonnie Thornton Dill, and Dean of Libraries Pat Steele also spoke.

Due to the excitement and quantity of our guests, the first speaker is sometimes difficult to see, but stick with us: the view improves as the video continues. Thanks to everyone who joined us in person and in spirit!

Yesterday we trekked over to Hornbake Library to check out MITH’s future location. After 12 years in McKeldin Library, additional staff and research expansion warrant a more robust space, and we’re excited. Amid the current occupant large book collection and VHS film archive, Director Neil Fraistat helped us envision an open-floor layout twice the size of our McKeldin office, and filled with light from floor-to-ceiling windows. Two glass walls frame a courtyard of green (do I hear Zen garden?), and we’ve already elected Grant Dickie as MITH Gardener. With Digital Collections, Nonprint Media Services and the iSchool as our neighbors, we hope to convert our new space in Hornbake into a digital hub of the humanities. Please return to our blog, and follow us on Twitter under hashtag #mithmove for updates regarding the move.
