I think all of that is thoroughly within DH. Whether it is soft or not, well, that is matter of rhetorical preference. I tend to think of the opposition as that between critical and practical modes of thinking or engaging with the digital. Coders may be doing interpretive praxis with building, but I strongly believe that this is when they are at their most naive critically, even if they are closer to the generative machinery of digital work. On the other hand, those who do not code, but who make heavy use of the ecology of digital resources in their research, are at an advantage in making sense of the emergent effects of digital media, both positively and negatively. So I think there is an important complementarity between coders and users that must remain a central and productive contradiction at the heart of DH.

Thanks for the clarifications! So how do we define those scholars using digital projects, working with digital archives, interpreting (for instance) word concordances etc.? Soft DHers? Or not DHers at all?

Interesting question, Nigel and I do think so — especially within the “job market,” I feel as though hierarchies are a given, and in some sense, I think these benchmarks and standards are what motivate the need to create definitions and boundaries.
