[00:20 - 00:25]
Now when my two boys and girls to listen I was your son's lady brings you another.
[00:25 - 00:35]
Let's find out.
[00:35 - 00:40]
How boys and girls fruits
[00:40 - 00:45]
contain the seeds of plants. Don't play.
[00:45 - 00:50]
You found that out last week didn't you. Good Did you
[00:50 - 00:55]
find any fruits that have the seeds on the outside instead of inside.
[00:55 - 01:00]
Did anybody remember as Dr. Berry who or are the
[01:00 - 01:02]
seeds of a strawberry.
[01:02 - 01:10]
While a strawberry is a very special kind of fruit most
[01:10 - 01:13]
fruits have the seeds inside. Well
[01:13 - 01:22]
how would you like to see how a very young fruit tree looks as it grows from the seed.
[01:22 - 01:27]
You can if you're careful. Plant some fruit seeds and find out.
[01:27 - 01:30]
We begin right now. All right.
[01:30 - 01:35]
Mr. Farmer Do you have everything ready there on your table.
[01:35 - 01:40]
Good. Mr. Gardner Are you ready to help Mr. Farmer show all the boys and girls in
[01:40 - 01:45]
your room how to plant trees. Well good for you.
[01:45 - 01:49]
First of all let's look at the soil. The garden soil
[01:49 - 01:55]
is this soil loose and fine. Well
[01:55 - 02:00]
let's be sure there are no big lumps in that soil. If there are
[02:00 - 02:05]
break up the lumps with your fingers. Miss Gardner go right ahead there and help Mr.
[02:05 - 02:10]
Farmer break up the soil. Be careful keep it in the box don't spill
[02:10 - 02:15]
any on the table or on the floor. Just hold your hand right over the box and make
[02:15 - 02:20]
it fine as you can by squeezing it or are loosening it
[02:20 - 02:25]
between your fingers. Right now it shouldn't be too lumpy.
[02:25 - 02:30]
Are you getting it broken up. All right because you feel damp to your
[02:30 - 02:35]
finger. Well I hope it's not too wet or we'll have mud here
[02:35 - 02:40]
before too long. All right do you think you have the big lumps broken up.
[02:40 - 02:45]
All right stop you can break up some more later if there are still too many lumps.
[02:45 - 02:50]
Mr. Farmer will you pick up one of the paper cups that
[02:50 - 02:51]
you have there.
[02:51 - 02:56]
All right now take it over him and hold it over the box of soil and fill it up.
[02:56 - 03:01]
Fill it to the very top with the garden soil. Don't pack it in
[03:01 - 03:06]
too tightly just let it fall into the cup until the cup is full.
[03:06 - 03:11]
All right now Mr. Gardner While Mr. Farmer is doing that look at the seeds that
[03:11 - 03:14]
you chose in there do you have some apples seamed.
[03:14 - 03:19]
Do you have some orange sea.
[03:19 - 03:23]
How about some grapefruit seeds. Well I hope you know which
[03:23 - 03:28]
seeds are which do you. All right you may
[03:28 - 03:33]
have seeds from a lemon or a pear or some other fruit I don't know what kind you chose to bring
[03:33 - 03:34]
today.
[03:34 - 03:38]
But Mr. Gardner which kind of seed would you like to plant in this first cup.
[03:38 - 03:45]
Choose one kind and pick out two or three of the seeds.
[03:45 - 03:50]
Have you decided all right Mr. Farmer Are you ready with a cup.
[03:50 - 03:55]
Is it full of soil. Good. Put the cup down on the table
[03:55 - 03:59]
so Miss gardener can plant the seed she's picked out. Listen Miss Gardner
[03:59 - 04:04]
push each C down into this soil not too deep and not too
[04:04 - 04:09]
close together but push them down into the soil in the cup just a little way
[04:09 - 04:14]
just so you can't see them. You've got a molly in there you'll have
[04:14 - 04:19]
to work fast because we've got lots to do. All right now with your fingers
[04:19 - 04:24]
pushed the so out over the seeds cover up the little holes that you made and
[04:24 - 04:30]
push the soil over all those scenes. All right you got it all screwed up.
[04:30 - 04:34]
All right now with your fingers close together press the soil down in
[04:34 - 04:39]
the cup not far just press it down so that below the
[04:39 - 04:44]
rim of the cup the edge of the cup. Don't pack it too tightly to
[04:44 - 04:49]
be pushed it down a little bit. Right. Are you
[04:49 - 04:54]
already Mr. Farmer will you hold the palm of one hand
[04:54 - 04:59]
over the top of the cup and tip it over on its side now listen again.
[04:59 - 05:03]
Put your hand over the top of the cup in which Mrs. Gardner just planted the
[05:03 - 05:08]
seeds and tip it over on the side. Don't let any soil fall out now
[05:08 - 05:13]
with your other hand pick up the pencil.
[05:13 - 05:18]
Now with the point of the pencil punch a hole in the bottom of the cup.
[05:18 - 05:23]
Punch it close to the center of the bottom of the cup I think if you do it quickly you
[05:23 - 05:27]
can punch it through in a hurry right now. Turn the cupped right
[05:27 - 05:32]
side up again. Why do you suppose we need
[05:32 - 05:36]
that hole in the bottom of the cup. Can anyone guess.
[05:36 - 05:47]
Who said to let the water drain out. You are right.
[05:47 - 05:52]
If we did not punch a hole in the bottom of the cup we might get too much water in the cup and
[05:52 - 05:57]
then the seeds wouldn't grow. It would be too wet for them they'd just rot.
[05:57 - 06:01]
Miss Gardner find one of the saucers are the aluminum pipes plates
[06:01 - 06:06]
and set the plate on the table away from the rest of the things that you're working with
[06:06 - 06:15]
right now Mr. Farmer. Put the cup into the little saucer are the plate.
[06:15 - 06:20]
Good. Miss Gardner. Have you got a bottle of water there are a pitcher of water. Good.
[06:20 - 06:26]
Pick it up and pour a little water over the soil in the cup.
[06:26 - 06:30]
Just pour enough in to wet the saw oil. Now if
[06:30 - 06:35]
some runs out the hole in the bottom of the cup it will run into the plate
[06:35 - 06:42]
that way. The soil in the cup will not be too wet for the siege to
[06:42 - 06:46]
grow a good way to water your seeds from now on
[06:46 - 06:50]
would be to pour a little water into the plate.
[06:50 - 06:55]
The soil will soak up the water from the bottom that way this feeds
[06:55 - 06:57]
won't get too wet.
[06:57 - 07:06]
Oh how are you going to know what kind of seed you planted in this first cup.
[07:06 - 07:11]
Could you Labor look up. Someone could write the name of the seed
[07:11 - 07:16]
right on the side of the cup couldn't you. Will you do that.
[07:16 - 07:21]
Or you could put a big A for apple seeds or an old for orange
[07:21 - 07:25]
seeds you decide after a while how you're going to label those cups. Maybe your
[07:25 - 07:29]
teacher will help you help you label them right now.
[07:29 - 07:34]
Now have you got another cup Mr. Farmer. Which seed would you
[07:34 - 07:39]
like to plant in another cup. Oh all right pick them
[07:39 - 07:43]
out. And Miss Gardner When you put soil into another cup for Mr. Farmer
[07:43 - 07:48]
feel another cup with so I'll just as he did for you go ahead
[07:48 - 07:54]
fill it all the way to the top don't press it down now just fill it up with that loose soil.
[07:54 - 08:02]
Hurry up now so we'll be ready here. Mr. Farmer Are you ready. Has Mr.
[08:02 - 08:07]
Gardner filled the cup for you or I put it down on the gas can Mr. Farmer plant your
[08:07 - 08:10]
seeds put them in.
[08:10 - 08:14]
Push him down not too far now just so they're underneath the level of the soil
[08:14 - 08:20]
and spread this soil back over the holes and
[08:20 - 08:25]
put your fingers together now and press the earth down so that it is
[08:25 - 08:28]
just below the rim of the cup.
[08:28 - 08:33]
All righty. Now you want to put your hand over the top of the cup
[08:33 - 08:40]
and tip it over and punch a hole in the bottom with a pencil.
[08:40 - 08:45]
All right you ought to be able to do this fast because you did it before. Punch a hole
[08:45 - 08:50]
right in the bottom of the cup. Are we going too fast. I'll let you
[08:50 - 08:54]
catch up your seed tearin and you press the earth
[08:54 - 09:01]
down and then you tip the cup over and punched a hole in the bottom.
[09:01 - 09:06]
All right are you ready to turn the cup right side up again. All right Mr. Gardner Can you
[09:06 - 09:11]
find another saucer our little aluminum plate their pie plate.
[09:11 - 09:15]
Will you put it over near the cup that you planted right
[09:15 - 09:20]
now. Put the cup in the little plate. And then Ms
[09:20 - 09:25]
Gardner I wonder if you'd like to add a little water to this one to put a little
[09:25 - 09:30]
water on the top don't let it run over the cup. Put enough in so it'll stay inside the
[09:30 - 09:31]
cup.
[09:31 - 09:38]
Now have you got any other kinds of scenes. Remember you're going to label this
[09:38 - 09:43]
one after a while can you remember which cup and which seed in it. You have to do the
[09:43 - 09:48]
remembering because I don't know just you who have planted the seeds will
[09:48 - 09:53]
know. All right do you think you can go ahead and plant the rest of the
[09:53 - 09:57]
seed you have in there as it would in as many cups as you have.
[09:57 - 10:03]
Do you have some markups. Well now what do you suppose is going to happen to
[10:03 - 10:08]
those little seeds in those cups. While I'm talking to you if you have more
[10:08 - 10:13]
cups and more seeds to plant maybe you have some great big
[10:13 - 10:17]
see from some other kind of fruit some
[10:17 - 10:22]
seeds will grow there quickly and some will take a
[10:22 - 10:27]
long time to sprout. Now I wonder if you'd
[10:27 - 10:32]
just like to find out for yourselves. I'm not going to tell you which ones of
[10:32 - 10:37]
those seeds are going to sprout first because I don't know what kind of seed you
[10:37 - 10:37]
have.
[10:37 - 10:42]
You may have orange seeds are an Apple C or somebody may have
[10:42 - 10:47]
brought a great Big Avocado C.. Did anybody bring an
[10:47 - 10:51]
avocado see. There are great big things almost as big as a ping pong
[10:51 - 10:56]
ball. Did anyone bring a peach seed or a cherry see.
[10:56 - 11:01]
Or are there lots of seeds of plants that you could bring and that per some of
[11:01 - 11:06]
you probably brought when our plant is many different kinds you can
[11:06 - 11:11]
and will you keep track of which ones sprout. The first
[11:11 - 11:16]
sprout bee before any of the others sprout. Now it
[11:16 - 11:21]
may be that some of them will grow in just a few days. Don't
[11:21 - 11:27]
be disappointed if your SEE do not begin to grow for a long time.
[11:27 - 11:31]
How are you going to keep them in a good place so they will grow.
[11:31 - 11:38]
Keep them in a place that is not too hot
[11:38 - 11:44]
nor too cold. And remember not to give them
[11:44 - 11:49]
too much water. If water stands on top of the
[11:49 - 11:53]
soil in the cup you know that you have too much in there
[11:53 - 11:59]
so let it dry out. Don't add any more water but add a little bit of water
[11:59 - 12:04]
whenever you think this soil is too dry. Now remember if you put too
[12:04 - 12:09]
much water in the seeds will rot. If you don't put enough
[12:09 - 12:14]
in they won't grow at all he'd need water
[12:14 - 12:19]
to grow. When you watch your plants carefully your seeds carefully
[12:19 - 12:21]
and see which one grows.
[12:21 - 12:26]
And I wonder. I'd like to know when your seeds sprout. I'd like
[12:26 - 12:31]
to know what you think they look like. Do you suppose a tree seed
[12:31 - 12:35]
sprouts and looks very much like any other kind of plant.
[12:35 - 12:42]
Would it be fun to find out all right now if you are
[12:42 - 12:47]
still working. Maybe you will help some of the other boys and girls.
[12:47 - 12:52]
It would be fun if each of you in your room. Would you each like to
[12:52 - 12:57]
plant some kind of a fruit seed in a paper cup or maybe you could
[12:57 - 13:02]
do that. You wouldn't have to do it right today but maybe you could remember to bring
[13:02 - 13:07]
some more seeds from home and a paper cup.
[13:07 - 13:11]
And plant a seed for yourself. Plant two or three in each cup
[13:11 - 13:17]
so that at least one of them will grow. Will you try that and will you let me
[13:17 - 13:23]
know how soon your seeds sprout and which ones sprout first.
[13:23 - 13:24]
Good for you.
[13:24 - 13:28]
Don't be disappointed if it takes a long time will you keep them watered
[13:28 - 13:33]
and keep them in a warm place so they really will grow when you do that.
[13:33 - 13:50]
All right.
[13:50 - 13:55]
Let's find out imagine night in the studios I'm playing against L.A. The St. Louis
[13:55 - 14:05]
Board of Education radio station.
[14:05 - 14:08]
This is the Emmy B Radio Network.
