judge is just as corrupt as the thief. It's just that he wears clothes
[11:58 - 12:02]
that the try to convince you he's not corrupt. Men and women are driven by me. It's

beneath their waists. All of life is based on social
[12:06 - 12:11]

second is that the universe despite appearances to the contrary

is ultimately just. There is the view of Gloucester before his
[13:52 - 13:57]
conversion. When he says as flies to wanton boys we are to the gods they kill us for their
[13:57 - 14:02]
sport. The notion of a man icky in a world where the gods look down upon us and
[14:02 - 14:07]
pull our wings apart to amuse themselves. And the view of the sun at
[14:07 - 14:07]

When he says rightness is all. When he says. I will believe that
[14:12 - 14:17]
only the stoic can adopt the proper attitude in the
[14:17 - 14:22]
face of his faith. He believes that the good of the world tally
[14:22 - 14:27]
the evil of the world to some extent and if good is punished. Well
[14:27 - 14:32]
Saul then is evil. Now Edgar must prove to his father that the
[14:32 - 14:37]
gods have some benevolence that he is wrong about them but they don't pull your wings off
[14:37 - 14:38]
for their pleasure.

Ironically he proves this to his father through a ruse a stratagem
[14:43 - 14:49]

[15:12 - 15:17]
temperament is found and stoical insurance stoicism
[15:17 - 15:21]
however is the philosophy of a dying world.

A world in which man cannot act to save himself. A world in
[15:26 - 15:31]
which men cannot act to improve or change the lot of others. It's a philosophy
[15:31 - 15:33]
of defeat.
[15:33 - 15:38]
A philosophy the same saves a man from ultimate frustration gives him some avenues
[15:38 - 15:40]
of action.
[15:40 - 15:45]
But not many. And a philosophy in fact will probably become pretty popular again in
[15:45 - 15:50]
our own time. In the face of our own frustrations impotence. And
[15:50 - 15:55]
anguish being unable to function actively. Towards what is
[15:55 - 15:56]
oppressing us.
[15:56 - 16:00]
But this star system that plaster affirms is the conclusion of a
[16:00 - 16:05]
subplot. It isn't the conclusion of the main plot. Shakespeare is clearly
[16:05 - 16:09]
Bill parallels between these two plots very carefully.
[16:09 - 16:13]
Gloster like Lear is blind. When he sees
[16:13 - 16:18]
and only sees when he goes blind. Like Oedipus too he's blind to who is
[16:18 - 16:22]
truly virtuous child there's things that.
[16:22 - 16:28]
Goneril and Regan a virtuous and so must soon learn their vicious. Gloucester thinks a dead man is
[16:28 - 16:33]
virtuous and must soon learn his vicious. Likelier Gloster divides as
[16:33 - 16:35]
a stake.
[16:35 - 16:40]
Childhood as I father says Gloucester about there. But he's only half the
[16:40 - 16:45]
man that liras Lear acts on his own. Gloucester must be
[16:45 - 16:50]
manipulated into his actions by his son.
[16:50 - 16:55]
Oh by his son Edmund he is an instrument in the hands of someone else

undergo suffering in extremis he suffers terribly but not rowing likely
[17:14 - 17:19]
or out of the suffering only come homily as an aphorism. The line you
[17:19 - 17:24]
remember of last year is and that's true too. Whenever I want to sign it because as I
[17:24 - 17:29]
said that's true too. Leo would never say that he's never led by anyone he's the one
[17:29 - 17:34]
that discovers the truth and the visionary has the vision. Most
[17:34 - 17:39]
important Lear ends up seeing much more deeply than Gloucester. And
[17:39 - 17:43]
suffering much more deeply than Gloucester to at the end of his great rages
[17:43 - 17:48]
past the tempest is over all his passion is
[17:48 - 17:53]
spent. He has awakened to find a ministering angel in the shape
[17:53 - 17:58]
of quote Delia. Tending him tending him in his illness and what he
[17:58 - 18:04]
has discovered is the poignancy and beauty of paternal love.
[18:04 - 18:09]
He's found a value in this world which is to love his child.
[18:09 - 18:13]
And this love has made him look lose interest completely and power
[18:13 - 18:19]
in land. And ceremony in accommodation.
[18:19 - 18:23]
But the terrible thing about this play is that Shakespeare doesn't let us stop here.
[18:23 - 18:30]
Every other artist would stop here but Shakespeare won't and he
[18:30 - 18:34]
withholds from Lior even this final solace even this final
[18:34 - 18:39]
comfort. With an ending that has proved much too painful for most
[18:39 - 18:44]
audiences to tear. An ending so painful that as you may know in the
[18:44 - 18:48]
18th century named Tate changed to keep Lear
[18:48 - 18:53]
and Co Delia alive to have them conquer the on of the armies of Goneril and
[18:53 - 18:58]
Regan. And have Cordelia marry Edgar at the end and everyone lives happily ever
[18:58 - 19:02]
after lives only to the age of one hundred and fifty.
[19:02 - 19:06]
But that doesn't happen here. And liers final play
[19:06 - 19:10]
is that could Delia must die.
[19:10 - 19:16]
HOW HOW HOW HOW.

and that would spoil the pity of the scene. Kent has been in
[20:27 - 20:32]
disguise up until this time takes off his disguise and reveals himself as the
[20:32 - 20:37]
servant cases when following their throughout the play. It stops
[20:37 - 20:41]
the action it interrupts it the need to tie up all the strings of the plot is a
[20:41 - 20:46]
structural fault in the play I think. But Shakespeare had a very good reason for introducing
[20:46 - 20:51]
that at this point which is that you need some relief from the tragedy or else you go
[20:51 - 20:56]
mad. There's unbearable pain in the scene which has somehow to be stopped has to
[20:56 - 21:01]
be interrupted to give you a chance to recover from the terror.
[21:01 - 21:05]
Leader makes one final appeal for justice in a world that has no
[21:05 - 21:10]
justice. And my poor fool is hanged. No
[21:10 - 21:12]
no no life.
[21:12 - 21:16]
Why should a dog a horse a rat have life.
[21:16 - 21:21]
And there are no breath at all dark no more
[21:21 - 21:25]

Those nevers and no others or cause repeated negatives throughout the play than the message of the

play.

heroes are allowed to examine. And then they're only allowed to examine it for a moment.

A life without illusion an accommodated life life

without hope without expectation. Life which excepts doesn't
[22:17 - 22:22]
accept but sees death as its final punctuation life which says all
[22:22 - 22:27]
striving leads to this and there is no comfort and there is no solace.
[22:27 - 22:31]
He has glimpsed the thing itself and accommodated life underneath
[22:31 - 22:36]
all the comforts and illusions that humans employ to black out
[22:36 - 22:41]
what they cannot stand to look at very long. And after a vision like this of
[22:41 - 22:46]
course death comes as a relief. Death is something you embrace. Death is
[22:46 - 22:51]
pleasure. It's a luxury. Because no man can look at this
[22:51 - 22:55]
vision very long. In my sense Tis happiness to dies as a
[22:55 - 23:00]
thought in Live sense. Tis happiness to die. And with the
[23:00 - 23:04]
death of Lear an age dies and the age of longevity and
[23:04 - 23:09]
