[00:05 - 00:10]
This is American Adventure a study of man in the New World. His
[00:10 - 00:15]
values and characteristics written by Johnny Lee directed by John
[00:15 - 00:19]
Clayton American Adventure is produced by the communications center of the University of North
[00:19 - 00:24]
Carolina. Earl when Director Tonight's program is about the famous
[00:24 - 00:29]
American Cyrus Theo and is the story of his efforts to lay the Atlantic
[00:29 - 00:40]
cable and tie together two continents.
[00:40 - 00:45]
20 30 to 65 the British writer Great Eastern late with steam up
[00:45 - 00:50]
engines silent all fall into Ireland. In her hold she carried seven
[00:50 - 00:55]
thousand tonnes of submarine telegraph people and a full supply of coal and
[00:55 - 01:00]
food for her long strange voyage to newcomers.
[01:00 - 01:04]
The meat supply was of course largely alive but there was hardly a sound from the
[01:04 - 01:06]
five coming to the chicken.
[01:06 - 01:11]
10 bullocks one milk cow one hundred fourteen sheep 20 pigs twenty
[01:11 - 01:14]
nine geese and fourteen the turkeys.
[01:14 - 01:19]
Even the animals seem to have taken on the pension held by the crewman who stood without speaking
[01:19 - 01:24]
and watched tensely waited nervously for the beginning of the vast enterprise.
[01:24 - 01:29]
The laying of the Atlantic. Only one man moved confidently. A man with
[01:29 - 01:34]
a beard. Stepped out of the Means a lot of if he had a care in the world.
[01:34 - 01:42]
Coffee too cold but it was a fabric first step. To feel.
[01:42 - 01:44]
Good morning same. Morning.
[01:44 - 01:49]
That. He was well known this man. Internationally
[01:49 - 01:54]
famous. For his failures. One of the most dedicated salesmen of all time.
[01:54 - 01:59]
Cyrus the Great Cyrus. The American Cyrus feat.
[01:59 - 02:17]
We got the cable sports to the shore and yet missed a few. I think so Captain Anderson.
[02:17 - 02:23]
Will anything you want to say before we begin laying the cable again. No thank you.
[02:23 - 02:26]
No speeches for me. I didn't say you were.
[02:26 - 02:30]
All things could hardly be better plan than they are captain. Cable has been repeatedly
[02:30 - 02:35]
checked machineries is good but I did just tell you where to tread before we start.
[02:35 - 02:40]
I've prayed about this so much Captain that I don't have to miss this I was
[02:40 - 02:44]
feeling pretty A.
[02:44 - 02:45]
Lot.
[02:45 - 02:51]
Here we are floating out on the ocean once more. Trying to do
[02:51 - 02:55]
something which many reasonable men we say cannot be done.
[02:55 - 02:59]
And looking to you and for help in doing it.
[02:59 - 03:04]
Now. Captain Anderson and I have come to you concerning this Atlantic
[03:04 - 03:09]
cable before. And you didn't see fit to favor us then. And
[03:09 - 03:14]
with look to ourselves to see what the fault might be. We found
[03:14 - 03:19]
many faults and no reason for you to help us. But there
[03:19 - 03:24]
are reasons outside Captain Anderson and Mr canning and these men and me.
[03:24 - 03:29]
We aim to connect two continents with instant communication because
[03:29 - 03:34]
we believe a better understanding will come between men.
[03:34 - 03:36]
Now.
[03:36 - 03:41]
If this is a cause which interests you in our behalf. We pledge to
[03:41 - 03:47]
give you the glory. In Jesus name Amen.
[03:47 - 04:01]
No doubt about it was defeated about what kept you already in practice.
[04:01 - 04:05]
There were men in both Europe and America who said that the Atlantic Cable could not be laid
[04:05 - 04:11]
at the speed of the ship the speed at which the cable was on while in the depths of the ocean would at some point
[04:11 - 04:12]
lose synchronization.
[04:12 - 04:17]
So that the cable would be ripped apart and the cable itself had to be perfect. The weather
[04:17 - 04:30]
had to be good or there were many reasons why it could not be done.
[04:30 - 04:35]
Say that Mr. Canning. How's it going. Everything is going through the machine
[04:35 - 04:40]
as the instrument room reported in continuous contact with the
[04:40 - 04:46]
station through the entire length of the cable. If anything happens I'll know about it soon
[04:46 - 04:51]
enough. It's a beautiful sound isn't it. Well think of the cable. It's a filter
[04:51 - 04:55]
for cable. Mr. Canning my wife says I'm in love with The Atlantic cable.
[04:55 - 05:18]
The road to mystify you have caused. Us to write more separate.
[05:18 - 05:22]
Men to go blind looking into cable up there the first day.
[05:22 - 05:27]
But your speed gap and started to three knots but we're up to six and off now that will
[05:27 - 05:28]
probably be the peak.
[05:28 - 05:31]
Yes we can. Cable faster than that.
[05:31 - 05:35]
How did you ever get into the cable lion business anyway Cyrus
[05:35 - 05:41]
stumbled and I reckon most of headsup reason. Show isn't any pleasure
[05:41 - 05:46]
to be at it. Oh I suppose I got tired of hanging up my necktie at the same stop
[05:46 - 05:50]
every night when I was 34 Captain Anderson. I had made my
[05:50 - 05:55]
fortune and retired with my wife and family to a beautiful home. To my friend was
[05:55 - 06:01]
nowhere in the world where. It started small but it grew with
[06:01 - 06:05]
this feeling. One night I remember hanging up my necktie on the same
[06:05 - 06:10]
stop as a hundred nights before and the fact that it was an expensive necktie didn't
[06:10 - 06:15]
relieve the fact that I was doing nothing and going nowhere. Where you go in Nashville back to
[06:15 - 06:20]
Newfoundland dragging a kid drawing please don't
[06:20 - 06:25]
even mention dragging that blasted film perhaps.
[06:25 - 06:29]
Probably lost all your money. Good percentage of it is down with the last cables. But
[06:29 - 06:34]
when we finish playing this one I'll be back in business. What makes you think you can make it this
[06:34 - 06:37]
time. You never made it before Mr. Field.
[06:37 - 06:42]
I have made it before same thing Seth was along on their trips I made it
[06:42 - 06:47]
7 years ago. Look Doc you would have heard about if those if. The people in
[06:47 - 06:52]
America almost with cries of celebration and bad news in newspapers and
[06:52 - 06:57]
people shouting cry and you could get a list deputy to Christopher Columbus.
[06:57 - 07:02]
I heard something about this. It was probably wrong no I remember there
[07:02 - 07:06]
were celebrating something in London once when my ship was in port. Something about a
[07:06 - 07:11]
cable. And I can't remember it very well. Like Mr caring said you were probably
[07:11 - 07:17]
drunk no. I remember the people in the streets and everybody was yelling.
[07:17 - 07:22]
I figured the Queen it had a baby. Maybe it was a
[07:22 - 07:25]
lot harder. Anyway I think I'm listening.
[07:25 - 07:32]
What's the major mistake Amy. I thought I had the machinery upstairs.
[07:32 - 07:35]
You couldn't have had it with all that noise.
[07:35 - 07:39]
I. Believe I'll go up on deck and check it.
[07:39 - 07:50]
Scuse me cos. MR. Ok goodnight.
[07:50 - 07:55]
I believe I would step out and take a look myself. Or he's got me all nervous. I
[07:55 - 08:00]
finished up a sometimes later safe nicer way to do so I was all right
[08:00 - 08:07]
kept me Captain Anderson.
[08:07 - 08:12]
I hope you don't click on the field for getting that celebration. I
[08:12 - 08:16]
was probably on the ship at the time. It didn't last long anyway so I thought they
[08:16 - 08:21]
said three weeks. Yes but then the cable stopped working so it was all a failure.
[08:21 - 08:27]
I don't like to be remembered. Sorry to have brought it up. It was like being on top
[08:27 - 08:32]
of the world with your name in the history books. And they knocked you off. You
[08:32 - 08:36]
feel foolish if you presume too much. That was the first cable you
[08:36 - 08:41]
tried mystery you know the third the first cable broke after about
[08:41 - 08:46]
400 miles. So we had to raise more money. The second cable we tried to
[08:46 - 08:51]
lay using two ships they met in the middle of the ocean. They are each took half the cable
[08:51 - 08:55]
and one started toward Ion the other toward Newfoundland. How did that work. We started three times
[08:55 - 09:01]
first and I got about three miles second time they got about 40. The third time they
[09:01 - 09:06]
got to 100. Before the cable broke so I
[09:06 - 09:11]
had to go back and raise some more money. Some of the stock holders wouldn't even come to the
[09:11 - 09:16]
meeting. I don't like to remember that those. A
[09:16 - 09:20]
third cable relayed successfully and the world went crazy.
[09:20 - 09:25]
My wife and I were having the most wonderful time of our lives. I was back home I was very happy.
[09:25 - 09:30]
The president of the royal family the governors mayors and the
[09:30 - 09:32]
cable stopped work.
[09:32 - 09:34]
And it started again and it stopped.
[09:34 - 09:40]
Then it would start and stop and start and stop until I wanted to put up with my
[09:40 - 09:43]
hands and check and it stopped for good.
[09:43 - 09:49]
So I started over. Raised three million dollars got another cable
[09:49 - 09:55]
at a great distance. Here we are. Yes I want some more coffee.
[09:55 - 09:58]
Yes that would be very kind of coffee.
[09:58 - 10:06]
Yesterday.
[10:06 - 10:11]
The Great Eastern was the largest vessel in the world at that time and I got a message from the testing room to Mr.
[10:11 - 10:16]
Canning of the payout machinery to Captain Alexander on the bridge and then to the engine room took quite a while.
[10:16 - 10:21]
But on the second day of the voyage a message made that lengthy round in the message was there's a fault in the
[10:21 - 10:35]
cable stopping and prepared to put it back in.
[10:35 - 10:40]
The bag. I don't know. And I don't know that's going to third the normal walking
[10:40 - 10:45]
speed of. The ship with the propellers on the side you know still it was at the mercy of
[10:45 - 10:47]
winter time the Atlantic.
[10:47 - 10:52]
Rolls which were fortunately fine after two hours of taking in cable
[10:52 - 10:56]
they cut it so that they might hook up their testing machinery to the island length and see if a proper signal was
[10:56 - 10:58]
now possible.
[10:58 - 11:04]
Cable was found to be still faulty so the operation continued.
[11:04 - 11:09]
Oh I've known cable to stop working for two hours no one knew who I am
[11:09 - 11:14]
then began again. I see Mr Fields is most likely it's a mistake on show
[11:14 - 11:19]
the take up machinery is doing all right except that one is new. It's an
[11:19 - 11:24]
improvement over the last two trips and I swear I missed a few. We get this craving
[11:24 - 11:29]
light I never want anybody to say cable to me again so long as I live.
[11:29 - 11:36]
And if we don't get to tonight and I said No I don't want anybody to say.
[11:36 - 11:41]
2 am to cable is cut again for a second test and show that the fault in the cables still
[11:41 - 11:46]
lay between the vessel and the Island station. Operations.
[11:46 - 11:51]
As the cable came aboard it was covered with a greyish coating of mud and moves from the bed
[11:51 - 11:52]
of the ocean.
[11:52 - 11:57]
The man washed it off and examined the cable foot by four. Like in Ireland for the Telegraph
[11:57 - 12:02]
signal had suddenly stopped engineers crowded around their equipment reporters for English and Continental
[12:02 - 12:07]
papers waiting for a man who had their money invested in the cable stock fidgeted nerve.
[12:07 - 12:12]
This way and what with all the bricks all of their worsening find bargains in Atlantic cable
[12:12 - 12:17]
stock that morning I was on deck at one third the speed of a
[12:17 - 12:21]
human lark the cable came back a little. I left
[12:21 - 12:23]
after dawn.
[12:23 - 12:26]
All right stop the machine or a.
[12:26 - 12:31]
Box of jewel the cable for another dish to the test
[12:31 - 12:36]
of the remaining cable was now sound engineers and Ireland raised their weighty
[12:36 - 12:41]
sigh of relief as the signal resumed. Reporters hurried to the nearby telegraph stations to
[12:41 - 12:46]
wire their reports at landing cable stock went up again.
[12:46 - 12:50]
Then about half an hour after the signal had resumed it stopped.
[12:50 - 13:01]
When you knew what was wrong with you know where the fault lie I tell you in just a
[13:01 - 13:06]
fever some men are stupid some you know smog we have smog minimal dis ship
[13:06 - 13:11]
whatever I want on the mish stupid. Sixteen hundred miles to go in my count
[13:11 - 13:16]
get 50. With a calm sea and in a shallow part of the ocean.
[13:16 - 13:21]
A short time later the cable again worked properly no one knew why it had stopped. No one
[13:21 - 13:26]
knew why it started again but the great eastern began putting down people
[13:26 - 13:28]
once more.
[13:28 - 13:32]
The fast hum of the cable running through the machinery was resumed.
[13:32 - 13:36]
Mile after mile of six nautical miles an hour the Great Eastern put hours then
[13:36 - 13:41]
days behinder its vision for the way things are going missed a field
[13:41 - 13:46]
or will be a new phenomena without great delay this machinery of yours as a
[13:46 - 13:50]
mob a mystic I believe it is way with just a little.
[13:50 - 13:55]
We're having the luck reading that soon we will get to the edge of the ocean
[13:55 - 14:00]
bank missed a field the depth of the rock there from 200 phantoms on
[14:00 - 14:05]
down to 700 dangerous seventeen hundred Never mind
[14:05 - 14:10]
never mind Mr. Catlin Mr. Field we're pulled into that little hobble
[14:10 - 14:14]
and Newfoundland Never mind I agree I agree with you. One of the four main for a
[14:14 - 14:18]
hobby you're no books it's nine and ten.
[14:18 - 14:27]
Yes pots contain Newfoundland.
[14:27 - 14:39]
Yet.
[14:39 - 14:42]
The actual journal of W.H. Russell who was aboard.
[14:42 - 14:46]
We take the following words.
[14:46 - 14:51]
July 27 morning broke on a bright clear blue
[14:51 - 14:56]
sky. From the testing room came gratifying reports improved insulation of the
[14:56 - 15:01]
cable which had been caused by the emotion of the cable Coda was that many
[15:01 - 15:05]
of them ended up parroting out journeys to the United States.
[15:05 - 15:07]
They speculate on the probability spots and you think.
[15:07 - 15:19]
And I can more a joyous progress all going successfully. Not a hitch in
[15:19 - 15:24]
cable. Machinery. Or ship. It's worthwhile to go and look at
[15:24 - 15:29]
the cables. As everyday and scan by watchful eyes and noted in books. That fly
[15:29 - 15:33]
so the whole apparatus. And then in a gentle skims the surface of the ocean
[15:33 - 15:38]
more than 200 feet. On.
[15:38 - 15:43]
Saturday July 29. Everything has gone on more admirably during the
[15:43 - 15:48]
night. Content on August 5th is certainly. No. Ship's Time.
[15:48 - 15:53]
Opposition is not to toot 52 degrees 33 minutes and 30 seconds
[15:53 - 15:58]
longitude 27 degrees and 40 minutes. Water two thousand
[15:58 - 16:03]
fathoms or two nautical miles. One 10 p.m. ship's
[16:03 - 16:08]
time. And ill omened activity about the testing room which has been visible
[16:08 - 16:12]
for some time reached its climax. The engines were slow. And five
[16:12 - 16:18]
minutes the great ship was motionless. In an instant afterwards. Everyone was on deck.
[16:18 - 16:22]
And the evil tidings flew from lip to lip. Something was wrong with him.
[16:22 - 16:32]
What's the pressure on the cable wire to transmit that to my notion take
[16:32 - 16:37]
more than act according to the authorities. What are you
[16:37 - 16:41]
thinking about Mr. Field. At this Spock seven years
[16:41 - 16:46]
ago Mr. Canning we began the second attempt to play in Atlantic cable seven
[16:46 - 16:50]
years ago and believe it or not it was on the same day
[16:50 - 16:56]
that if they win air that is a coincidence. Why do you do it.
[16:56 - 17:01]
Satish. Why do you keep dry and. The last time we had
[17:01 - 17:06]
to stop and pick up table to fold was a piece of wire not an inch long which had pierced the
[17:06 - 17:10]
cables insulation. After years of planning making
[17:10 - 17:15]
preparations a piece of wire not an inch long threaten the success of the whole
[17:15 - 17:20]
thing. Why do you do it. Because. Some day Mr.
[17:20 - 17:25]
Canning. I'm going to retire to New York or to Boston and join some
[17:25 - 17:29]
important club or. Get a chair by the fire and win some young
[17:29 - 17:34]
whippersnapper comes up to me and says Where's her. And what do you do.
[17:34 - 17:38]
I want to say. Where young man.
[17:38 - 17:43]
I haven't been doing much. Since I laid the Atlantic cable. I want to see
[17:43 - 17:48]
his expression said Rudisha it is big. That's why it's the biggest thing I've ever
[17:48 - 17:53]
heard of. It's something my sons and grandsons can be proud of and point
[17:53 - 17:58]
back to and say. I'm Cyrus feel the 8 for the ninth. And people will look up
[17:58 - 18:02]
and say I've heard the name. It's big Mr. Canning.
[18:02 - 18:07]
It's impossible as a man too big and some of them impossible men climb mountains and of course
[18:07 - 18:10]
they do but only foolish ones. You know.
[18:10 - 18:15]
Men are peculiar creatures. A lion an elephant they wouldn't climb a mountain just because
[18:15 - 18:20]
it was big Goss somebody said it was impossible to do it. But. Man wouldn't.
[18:20 - 18:25]
Man likes to stand on the top of accomplishments and give his lion's roar. Look. Look
[18:25 - 18:30]
where I am. Look here all you past generations of two legged creatures you
[18:30 - 18:35]
crusaders and kings and squires and sea captains and mothers and artisans of a thousand
[18:35 - 18:40]
years ago. Look here this is what you said a man could not do.
[18:40 - 18:45]
It is done. I don't care about their
[18:45 - 18:50]
status and also they're the people a thousand years ahead will be
[18:50 - 18:55]
striking at even greater accomplishments and tracing back their history. I
[18:55 - 18:59]
would be a part of their history. They would say. And back here in
[18:59 - 19:04]
1865 a group of men aboard our ship did the impossible and aided the progress
[19:04 - 19:09]
of all mankind when they laid the Atlantic cable. Recruited and people
[19:09 - 19:15]
on board. I'm staying awake knowing Yes. And.
[19:15 - 19:20]
For us have missed accounting. For the faces of the people when you say.
[19:20 - 19:26]
Well young man. I haven't done much since I laid the Atlantic cable.
[19:26 - 19:31]
And 9:30 p.m. ship's
[19:31 - 19:32]
time.
[19:32 - 19:37]
That part of the cape over the Mister play was picked up. Was at once cut. And
[19:37 - 19:42]
reserved to be examined by Mr. Canning. The short end was spliced in jointed to a
[19:42 - 19:47]
fresh end of the cable from the ass of the tank. These operations were finished before midnight.
[19:47 - 19:52]
But it was not judged expedient to assume the process of paying out until the morning.
[19:52 - 19:56]
As yet no one knew the nature of the injury to the cable.
[19:56 - 20:01]
No one could account for the hitch. But it certainly did not affect anyone's belief in success.
[20:01 - 20:13]
We've been a bit delighted Cyrus but we've had that off way and then with a little luck
[20:13 - 20:18]
or they'll be calling you Christopher Columbus again you'll be the toast of Ireland and America
[20:18 - 20:23]
again Cyrus the little duck on the night of August 2nd on the bus it was
[20:23 - 20:27]
almost two thirds of the way across a gale rolls from the westward.
[20:27 - 20:31]
Then the wind shifted suddenly to the north northwest. There was a deep fog the sea was
[20:31 - 20:36]
