Overview of the course : S272 Gender and Sexuality Murdoch University, Western Australia Course Co-ordinator : Lynne Alice E-mail: alice@csuvax1.murdoch.edu.au Two sessions each week ie a lecture/workshop/film/discussion group on Thursdays, 1.30pm to 3.30pm with a half hour break , then 4 pm to 5.30pm in Room 1.36, Social Sciences building. Note : The four hour timeslot enables a variety of formats for the sessions. Please familiarise yourself with the format of each session. Weeks 1 - 5 lectures/workshops on theories of gender and sexuality Weeks 6 - 7 lectures/workshops on cross cultural perspectives Weeks 8 - 11 lectures/workshops on sites of contested identities Weeks 12 - 13 seminars, novel presentations, evaluations. Summary of Course Sessions 1. Overview of 'gender' in the interactionist critique of positivist social theory. Film ('Metamorphosis: Man into Woman') and discussion. 2. Social constructionism and its uses in feminist sociology of gender : Ann Oakley to Mary O'Brien and Dorothy Smith. Workshop : 'Harold and Agnes' : Garfinkel, gender, and the ongoing debate, using last week's readings. 3. Gender identity in lesbian and gay theory : Jeffrey weeks to Michel Foucault, Kenneth Plummer, Lillian Faderman and Carol Warren Film ('The life and Times of Harvey Milk') and discussion 4. Theorising heterosexuality. Review of concepts and debates. 5. Feminism meets postmodernism. Discussion of themes in texts by Butler, Watney, weeks and Woodhouse (see assignments) 6. Cross cultural perspectives on gender: (berdache, mahu etc) Film ('India's Third Gender') and discussion 7. Cross cultural perspectives on sexuality, with video clips ('Khush - Gays and Lesbians in India') Film ('AIDS in Australia - the ethnic experience') and discussion. 8. Transsexualism and gender b(l)ending Video ('My husband to be is a transsexual') and discussion. 9.
